Change of Heart by Jodi Picoult

April 30, 2008

51lrutmqgl_ss500_.gif

June might be forgiven for thinking her bad luck had come to an end. First of all her beloved husband was killed in a crash caused by a drunk driver. Against all the odds, and surprising even herself, June fell in love with the policeman who pulled both her and her baby daughter, Elizabeth, from the wrecked car … and soon there was the joy of a second daughter for them.

Then Shay Bourne arrived on the doorstep, his tool bag in hand, looking for odd jobs … and he kind of just stayed around. It wasn’t that he was threatening, in any way, more that he was a bit silent and generally strange. His words used to get sort of tangled up with themselves, but he seemed to be honest and a hard worker.

But then Kurt and Elizabeth were brutally murdered in their home. Shay was found with them, covered in blood. … June didn’t think that things could get much worse. But they did.

Her surviving daughter, Claire, developed heart problems and she was told she would die without a transplant. The only donor to match was Shay Bourne – on death row for the double homicide of Kurt and Elizabeth. Could June possibly allow the heart of her sister’s murderer to be put in Claire’s chest to save her life?

The moral dilemma in Jodi Picoult’s new novel is as riveting as ever. Using her trademark pattern of looking at the problem from many different angles, she involves the reader far beyond the usual cut and thrust of a good engrossing novel. Add to this mix the glimpse of life as it is on death row, the medical requirements of matching heart to body and the legal wrangling about whether or not it would be possible in those circumstances. Not to mention a Biblical twist … No one is better at writing about a dilemma than Jodi … and CHANGE OF HEART is another challenging read.

Jodi Picoult grew up in Nesconset, New York, and has established herself as a UK top-three bestselling author. She received an A.B. in creative writing from Princeton and a master’s degree in education from Harvard. Her previous novels include NINETEEN MINUTES, SECOND GLANCE, MY SISTER’S KEEPER and TENTH CIRCLE. She lives in New Hampshire with her husband and three children.

Win Tickets To The Polo With The British Olympic Association’s Centenary Polo Match

ENJOY A DAY AT THE POLO WITH THE BRITISH OLYMPIC ASSOCIATION’S CENTENERY POLO MATCH

29th May 2008, Guard’s Polo Club

A day at the polo, mingling with the beautiful people, celebrities and even the occasional jodhpur-wearing member of the Royal Family, is a regular fixture in the calendars of anyone moving in ‘high society’ circles. For most people, however, the closest they’ve come to watching polo is when Julia Roberts headed out onto the pitch to tread the divots in Pretty Woman with her leading man Richard Gere. More recently, Girls Aloud’s Sarah Harding gave us a further insight into the world of polo when she underwent grueling training to play in a match in The Passions Of Girls Aloud.

Now, thanks to the British Olympic Association (BOA), everyone can enjoy an afternoon at the polo. To mark the 100th anniversary of the Olympic Games first being held in London, Great Britain will take on Ireland on May 29th at the swanky Guards Polo Club in a historical re-staging of the 1908 final. At just £25 per ticket, an afternoon of glamour won’t break the bank and makes a great alternative to a day at the races this summer.

As well as watching some top-class polo action on the field, a trip to Guards Polo Club for the BOA’s 1908 Centenary Polo match is a great excuse for girls and boys to get dressed up in their best gear for a day of glamour. What’s more, everyone that comes along will be supporting the BOA in their efforts to fund the development of Team GB as they aim for future Olympic glory.

For anyone who fancies splashing out, the polo action will be followed by an exclusive BOA fundraising dinner and auction, helping to raise money towards the cost of preparing and sending Team GB to compete at the Olympic Games. Tables for the dinner are still available, from www.teamgb.com/supportus.

Tickets for the 1908 Centenary Polo match are priced at £25, available from www.guardspoloclub.com or by calling 01784 437797. Tables at the BOA Fundraising Dinner, including VIP tickets for 1908 Centenary Polo match, are strictly limited and available from www.teamgb.com/supportus or by emailing events@boa.org.uk.
