Black is the new bright. Summer is usually associated with bright colours, but with autumn just around the corner, classic black is stepping up to the mark. Although autumn spells miserable weather, there’s no need to be sad as the new trend has it covered. Black has been a statement, solid base colour since it was introduced and popularised by Chanel in the 1940’s, and invokes an array of emotions. From sad to sexy, suave to sweet, black has the power to make any look work. This year, black isn’t just a part of a trend, it is the trend itself. Head to toe in black may sound a bit heavy, but designers have created catwalks looks that don’t intimidate but accommodate, no matter your shape or size.
With this in mind, we’ve picked a few key items, available on the high street, that make the black trend accessible for all:
Leggings? Love them. Sequins? Love them even more. So imagine if they were combined. No need to dream anymore, as they have finally arrived! After the chic sex appeal of the glossy leather legging, the sequin legging oozes glamour. Perfect for a night out with some killer heels and a vest, these leggings do all the talking – no accessories needed. Dorothy Perkins have them in stock as Limited Edition, so get them now before they go!
There was once a time when leather jackets were strictly for bikers or men in a mid-life crisis and no self respecting fashionista would be seen near one; but over the last year things have turned around. Leather jackets have made a fashionable name for themselves, arriving in high street [and designer] stores, everywhere. From real leather, to shiny plastic leather; they were a key piece during last winter and through this spring. Autumn will see them appear again, so grab one now if there wasn’t one hiding in the closet already. Topshop sell the more expensive, real leather pieces, but you can find cheaper, less ‘real’ ones from most places, such as New Look. If leather’s not your thing, look out for black blazers [also at New Look] to sophisticate your look.
Whilst waistcoats can make you look a bit more ABBA than fab, we have found a cool black denim waistcoat from Miss Selfridge that will make sure you’ll be having the last laugh! Perfect for a variety of occasions, from fashionable festivals, nights out at the bar or day time shopping sprees, this waistcoat is versatile in it’s function. Incorporating another of this season’s trend, the waistcoat is embellished with gold studs, and gives any plain black vest or dress, an edgy look. Black doesn’t have to be boring, sequins, studs and other details can transform any plain black item into a statement piece.
If you’ve dressed up the rest of your outfit with accessories, different textures or patterns, keep the base top simple. A nice black vest or t-shirt is ideal to make sure you don’t look glamorous funeral rather than just glamorous. If you fancy a vest with a twist, we’ve found basic one shoulder vests from ASOS to incorporate another trend.
Heels were made to be high, and with a sleek black outfit, there is nothing more fitting than a pair of skyscraper heels to slim line your look. Whether patent, matte, boots or courts; black heels are the perfect finish for a full black outfit. Heels go with anything [leggings, jeans, skirts, dresses, shorts] especially a girl with style, so check out Faith shoes; we’ve found some beautiful courts, and they’re half price too! Winner!
