This summer sees the welcome return to fashion for something of a timeless classic: the trench coat.  The trench coat is welcome not just as a practical addition to the wardrobe when faced with the challenging personality of the British summer.

The trench coat speaks of classic 20th Century poise and style, Audrey Hepburn-in-Paris glamour.  The trench coat has a strange sex appeal for a garment that covers most up most of a woman’s body, and perhaps this is due to the air of mystery resulting from this cloaking effect.

The trench has come a long way from the origins belied by the name of this coat.  There are competing claims for the invention of this design, one of which is from the British luxury clothing company Aquascutum, dating back to the 1850’s.  Later, one Thomas Burberry was to submit a design to the War Office in the U.K. for an army officer’s raincoat in 1901.  When the First World War broke out, both British and French soldiers were equipped with heavy greatcoats as a matter of course.  The trench coat was adopted as a lightweight alternative to the cumbersome greatcoat, but perhaps unsurprisingly for those who have studied British military history, the use of the superior trench coat was limited to officers and warrant officers – lower ranks were forbidden from wearing them.

After the First World War, de-mobilised officers continued to wear trench coats, and it was from this point on that the garment entered the lexicon of fashion.  Never really out of fashion, the trench coat has been re-invented time and again – for men, and particularly for women.  This summer, it is the mini-trench that is the must have summer coat for women.  An above the knee hemline and rolled up sleeves is the casual, more relaxed look to go for, wearing the trench coat open rather than belted.  Have a look online for the new twist on the trench and you’ll find plenty of suppliers such as New Look providing the coats in some fashion friendly lightweight materials that are perhaps more flexible than the traditional heavy gabardine material of the classic trench.

Once the wardrobe staple of only the boho hippy chicks, the maxi dress has now become one of this summer’s must-have fashion items. From Eva Longoria to the England WAGS, Kylie to Kate Moss, we take a look at this surprise hit of the summer and how to wear it.

One of the best things about the floor-length maxi is that it’s incredibly forgiving. In the summer months, if you’re feeling self conscious about any wobbly bits, the maxi will hide them all. But choose the wrong style and you could end up looking shapeless, and bigger than you really are.

If you’re petite, then if you don’t choose wisely, you could look swamped by your maxi dress. Avoid dresses that are too long for you, as these will take inches off your height. Choosing a maxi dress with a halter or v- neck will help to elongate your figure too.

To avoid looking like you’ve just stepped out in a tent, look for maxi cuts that are fitted to the body. Pay particular attention to your waist and look for styles that have a fitted waist, or some structure in the chest area, or cinch in your maxi dress with a belt.

Larger ladies can use some tricks to flatter their shape in a maxi too. Look for maxi dresses with halter necks or thick straps as thin spaghetti straps can make your shoulders and upper torso look bigger. You can also get away with fabulous big bold prints in a way that petite girls can’t, so make the most of the Pucci-inspired prints that are out there at the moment.

To slim a larger figure with a maxi dress, look for dresses in one solid colour – khaki and olive green are big this season – and create a waist using a wide, single colour belt. If you’re worried about upper arms, cover up with a shrug, cropped cardigan or cropped jacket, as this will help to accentuate your waist too.

When it comes to footwear, heels are great with a maxi dress, adding height and keeping your dress in proportion with your frame. We’d say avoid spindly heels and go for stronger shoe shapes that will stand out against your bold maxi dress – this season’s heeled espadrilles look fab, as do that other summer must-have, the wedge heel.

Shopping for maxi dresses is easy this season, as you’ll find them all over the high street. For an authentic boho look, look to vintage and second hand stores for the real deal. Otherwise hit up the high street at stores like New Look where you’ll find affordable maxi dresses that incorporate all of the maxi dress trends and shapes.

Day one: Preparation

Hair
To get that tousled ‘just swam in the ocean’ look from your bathroom, Suzi suggests: “Begin by shampooing and conditioning your hair and then towel drying it. Simply put your hair into several plaits for a few hours then all you have to do is untwist your plaits and you are ready to go.”

Make under

Holiday make-up is all about keeping things simple yet looking gorgeous and sexy.

1) Face

“Keep excess shine at bay by applying an anti-shine primer mainly to your t-zone.
