This summer, I have been no exception. My boyfriend and I broke up this summer after nearly 3 years together. Sure it was an awful time and a hurtful thing to go through, but at the end of the day I’m not alone.
Back on the single market I wanted to get out and meet guys. Not to start a new relationship or get into anything serious but just to see what the dating scene is like after being off the market so to speak for 3 years.
This led me on a Sunday evening into searching for dating websites. The process isn’t difficult you just type in dating websites into Google and automatically you get hundreds of potential websites enticing you to join theirs. I was intrigued instantly. I mean how can a website offering you to find your perfect match be anything but perfect?
After searching through and dismissing ones that you have to pay for I came across Smooch. This offered free access and you can use all features without having to pay. I immediately signed up and started the gruelling process of answering those dreaded first date questions. Describe yourself, what is your ideal partner and what do you enjoy doing. Suddenly all the things that are natural to you that you know you enjoy doing become vital, and you start to wonder if you are good enough. After spending what seemed like an age writing about myself and uploading a picture it was finally done. I was an official Smoocher.
This is when it got interesting. Within 15 minutes I had already received 40 plus emails from potential men wanting to talk and giving masses of compliments. At first it was a huge ego booster. Receiving all these messages from men telling you how beautiful you are, how hard is it not to be sucked in? Is this what dating websites are, a tornado waiting to pull women in? Waiting to pull women into this trap of love?
As previously researched it is said that women use the left more emotional side of the brain, hence why as soon as men tell us we are beautiful we immediately conform to what ideals they want. Is this why so many people join dating websites? To fall into a trance of misconception or is it in fact all real, do people actually believe all of what they are being sent?
Some of the messages I was sent were unbelievable. It ranged from a 53 year old man, in the prime of his life, wanting to wine and dine me. A 23 year old whose fantasy is toe sucking. A clingy 21 year old who texts 20 times a day. Various 30 something year olds wanting to chat and have cyber sex. After all of this but a hundred times worse I was ready to give up. Even though it was satisfying to hear lovely things about yourself, after tonnes of emails a day I had had enough. It occurred to me that people weren’t actually reading my profile wanting to get to know me, they’d seen a picture and that’s all they were interested in. How is that real? At this point I was so tempted to find a different picture to see if this would change anything. This got me to thinking is online dating all about a picture?
Just when I was about to give up I had a message from someone who interested me. This hadn’t happened to me the whole time I was on Smooch, it was full of fake compliments and weirdo’s wanting cyber sex. This guy was different and I knew straight away. His message wasn’t just about my looks, he was interested in me. He wanted to know more about me, not just what bra size I am.
Although my overall view on online dating is negative after my experiences, I’m sure there are people out there who do manage to find the real thing on dating websites, and once you separate the idiots, there are actually the very few guys who are rarities and ones you might even end up falling for.

4. Personally my biggest fantasy is to have sex in the sea, and this is certainly something I will be fulfilling this summer!
