Creating the Perfect Small Garden Oasis!

Not all of us keen gardeners have luscious green gardens with masses of space to grow our plants and vegetables. It is often the case that some of us with smaller, courtyard style gardens are just as keen to create a beautiful, tranquil and ultimately productive space for our families.

In this feature we work with Jersey Plants Direct to show you how you can create the perfect small garden with a little imagination, some great plants and vegetables and a few simple tricks. We loved the idea of being able to order plants online, this is great for busy mums, working families and just about anyone really as it means everything is delivered to your door, leaving you free to get everything arranged before they arrive!
Plants are a lot hardier than they look.  They don’t always need for you to have a vast amount of space and usually small garden beds and colourful pots and accessories can work wonders!

We used the Small Gardens section of Jersey Plants to show you just how easy it is to create a real, small garden from scratch at the back of Girlie Gossip towers!

Plants in Pots

A lot of our garden was created by potting up plants, you will probably find that they may not grow quite as large as those put directly into the earth in open beds, but some have really thrived and we have managed to successfully grow the following:

Chives
Wild Garlic
Lots of Strawberries which we displayed In red hanging baskets.

For a bit of colour and foliage we used Cordyline Pink Passion and Cordyline Red Star Cordylines are palm-like plants grown for their evergreen architectural form. They make attractive feature plants.

This cordyline is unique due to the vivid pink colour and contrasting lilac and purple in its foliage. It would make an attractive feature in a border, container or even as a house plant.

We also dotted around plants from this Acer Collection Butterfly Sango Katsura which have a variety of different coloured leaves!

We planted some beautiful sunflowers in the beds at the end of the garden by the fence and when they flower they will really brighten up this area, making a great feature and a good way of introducing wildlife into the gardens when the birds come to gather the leftover seeds.

We mixed in various bedding plants to add colour and variation and also grew some peppers and chillies which are just beginning to flower nicely  along with some tasty herbs which have already been used in many salads!

We have a good selection of vegetable plants including Tomatoes, which are just starting to give us some tiny little green and yellow toms!

We also have green beans, aubergine, mixed salad leaves and much more in raised beds and pots on the other side.

About Jersey Plants Direct

Jersey Plants Direct are an internet and mail order plant company.  We sell a year round range of Jersey grown bedding plants, perennials, shrubs, vegetable plants and seeds, bulbs and gardening accessories. So whether you are looking for Geraniums or Begonias, Petunias or Pansies, Roses or Clematis – we have all your garden favourites and what’s more we’ll deliver them to you for FREE!

We sanded down an old downtrodden looking table and chairs set and varnished with some Ronseal. They have a step by step guide here for the Hardwood Furniture Stain in Dark Rosewood that we’ve used on our set.  We also made our own plant tables and beds out of an old wooden pallet and some more of the Ronseal.

This was really easy to make and looks very rustic in the garden with all of the plants surrounding it!

Plants 4 Presents

Last but not least, we set down some little Lemon and Lime Trees from Plants 4 Presents just outside on the patio.

These have absolutely thrived in the sun and look so pretty in their little pots! We will have to bring them in through winter, but right now they are flowering nicely and we hope to get lots of delicious citrus fruit.

The plants 4 presents site is actually great for those wanting to give gardening related gifts (they come brilliantly packaged) and they have an amazing selection if you fancy treating yourself for your own garden like us! I think that Chilli plants, grapefruit and mulberry bushes might be on my wish list for next year’s purchases from them! Check out the full range here: http://plants4presents.co.uk/

We added dragonfly lights and twinkling candles along the fencing and brick wall area to make it just as pretty at night-time as it is during the day. Perfect for those wanting a little garden haven for relaxing with a glass of wine!

So there you go, that’s how we used online plant companies to create a small, courtyard garden to be proud of! Take a look at our fab gallery pics and let us know if you agree!
