On Monday 27 September over quarter of a million new tickets will be released for the original London production of the smash hit musical “MAMMA MIA!”, as the show worldwide continues to go from strength to strength. By 2011, every continent on the planet (barring the Arctic) will have enjoyed a production of ‘MAMMA MIA!’
Since opening in London in 1999, “MAMMA MIA!” will soon have been translated into 14 languages and performed in over 270 cities in over 30 countries. With long-running productions still playing to sold out audiences in London and on Broadway, the production has been translated into German, Japanese, Dutch, Korean, Spanish, Swedish, Flemish, Russian and Norwegian. With touring productions currently in South Africa, Spain, Japan, USA and an English language tour which is in its 7th year of worldwide touring, “MAMMA MIA!” shows no sign of waning, with new productions opening this year for the first time in French, Italian, Danish and Portuguese for productions in Paris, Milan, Copenhagen and Sao Paolo. Plans are currently underway for a Chinese production to open in 2011 as Broadway celebrates its 10th Anniversary.
The smash-hit musical based on the songs of ABBA celebrated its 11th London birthday in April this year, and has now been seen by more than one in ten of the UK population. The show continues to break box office records at the Prince of Wales Theatre, holding the highest ever weekly gross taken in a week at that theatre in history. To date MAMMA MIA! has grossed £185 million at the UK Box Office and over $2 billion worldwide. Immortalised in the film starring Meryl Streep, “MAMMA MIA!” was the highest grossing musical film release worldwide.
Linzi Hateley and Jessie May star as mother and daughter ‘Donna and Sophie Sheridan’, alongside Harriet Thorpe as ‘Tanya’ and Catherine Russell as ‘Rosie’. The cast also includes Norman Bowman as ‘Sam Carmichael’, Paul Ryan ‘Harry Bright’, Christopher Hollis ‘Bill Austin’, Joshua Sasse ‘Sky’, Nicola Hawkins ‘Ali’, Nicky Griffiths ‘Lisa’, Alex Jessop ‘Pepper’ and Paul-Michael Jones as ‘Eddie’. At certain performances, the role of ‘Donna Sheridan’ will be played by Sara Poyzer or Melissa Jacques.
Inspired by the story-telling magic of ABBA’s timeless songs, writer Catherine Johnson’s enchanting tale of family and friendship unfolds on a Greek island paradise. On the eve of her wedding, a daughter’s quest to discover the identity of her father brings three men from her mother’s past back to the island they last visited 20 years ago…
