You may have had mild anxiety in the past or suffer from a disorder or never felt anxious at all. Becoming pregnant can trigger symptoms of anxiety or heighten the anxiety disorder you already have. The change in hormones can cause an imbalance in the chemicals in our brains and change our thoughts.

As a country, we have come a long way with mental health and there’s no longer the huge stigma attached. Growing a baby can be an emotional experience and there’s no shame in asking for help. Talk to the people around you. Sometimes all we need is to offload our worries and simply sharing our feelings can make a huge difference. Everyone is different in how they choose to relax. what may work and be amazing for some, may not work well for others. Having anxiety in pregnancy can make it very difficult to find that sense of calm. It can be really frustrating when all you want to do is switch off. Here are a few ideas that have been known to help:

Distract Your Mind

Mindfulness can help a lot with anxiety in pregnancy. Just being able to switch off your thoughts for a while each day can make a huge difference. A lot of people think of mindfulness as meditation, and although meditation can be amazing for some, it doesn’t always work well for anxiety as it can be hard to stop those racing thoughts. Distraction techniques seem to work much better for most. Here are a few ideas:


Pick out one of your favourite colouring books and your favourite colours and away you go. Before you know it, you’ve finished a page and you will notice that your thoughts have slowed down.

Writing can be very therapeutic. jotting down your thoughts and feelings can give you a sense of release. It’s like a weight gets lifted off your shoulders and it can make your head feel less full. Get yourself a positive thoughts notebook and when you feel low or suffering from anxiety in pregnancy, look back at all the things you have to be positive about.

Cuddling your pets

Cuddling our pets has been proven to release endorphins in the brain and oxytocin, known as the “feel-good” hormone. The endorphins released are the same as the ones you feel when you have your favourite chocolate bar or when you exercise. Cuddling has also been linked to lowering blood pressure and heart rate too.

Draw Or Sketch

Drawing can have the same benefits as writing. You can draw your thoughts and feelings or simply draw whatever comes into your mind. This can also be very therapeutic.

Play Video Games

You probably don’t see this one very often when looking for ways to beat anxiety in pregnancy, but if you’re into gaming, then simply playing your favourite video game can distract your mind from those racing thoughts.

Clean the anxiety in pregnancy away

You know the saying, “Tidy House, Tidy Mind”. Cleaning can give you a real sense of accomplishment and a lot of pregnant women have the urge to “nest” anyway. Blast out your favourite tunes and take before and after photos. Have a good clear out as you go along. This not only passes the time and distracts your mind, but also gives you a beautifully clean home to relax in at the end of the day.
