Garden Spells Book Review

Bascom, North Carolina is a town where everyone is known for their family’s characteristics, passed down through generations. One family’s women are good in bed: they always marry well. One family gives birth to a strong man – always called Josiah – once in a generation (you go to him to help you when you move house). The Waverleys are known for their magic touch: Evanelle, who’s lived in Bascom all her life, gives people what they need before they know they need it; Claire, who came to town when she was six and never wants to leave, can turn the plants in her garden into delicious food and drink with spectacular effects on those who consume it; Sydney, who ran away from her home town at 18, hasn’t worked out what hers is. When Sydney returns to Bascom with her little girl, in flight from an abusive marriage, she proves a catalyst for change in the lives of all three women.

From the Inside Flap
Welcome to Bascomb, North Carolina, where it seems that where
it seems everyone has a story to tell about the Waverley women. The old
house that’s been in the family for generations, the walled garden that
mysteriously blooms year round, the rumors and innuendoes of dangerous
loves and tragic passions. Eccentric, reclusive, or renegade, there’s not a
one that wasn’t somehow touched by magic.
As the town’s successful caterer, Claire has always clung closely to the
Waverleys’ roots in their enchanted soil, tending the family garden from
which she makes her much sought-after delicacies. She has everything she
thinks she needs – until one day she finds a vine of ivy creeping into her
garden and knows that everything is about to change.

Then her prodigal sister Sydney arrives with her five-year-old daughter and
a dark secret she hopes to keep well hidden. And suddenly Claire’s
carefully tended life is about to run gloriously out of control.
Sarah Addison Allen’s beguiling and luminous new novel is sure to cast its
spell over even the most sceptical heart.

What Girlie Gossip Thought …

Wow! If you are looking for a book that has a little bit of romance, a lot of magic and a great storyline then Garden Spells by Sarah Addison Allen is definately something you should be reading. The relationship which develops between the two sisters as well as the men in their lives is truly spellbinding and once I started reading this book I simply couldn’t put it down. A must read!!

  • I work at Hodder & Stoughton, publisher of this book. Just to avoid confusion I wanted to highlight that the cover shown is that of the hardback. It’s now out in paperback with a different cover. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

  • I’m not normally into Magic or Fantasy, but this sounds great…. I may just have to read it! Sounds like a good one for lazy summer days!
